Concept/Purpose of the Work:
Umbra centers the intersectional experiences of Black women. Inspired by her own experiences and the experiences of other Black women, Terresa Moses was compelled to create work which validates and uncovers the institutional racism and sexism perpetuated in this community everyday.
Each illustration delves into six themes which Moses has identified as gaze, control, savior, (d)anger, burden, and liberation. It is her hope that all individuals come to realize their contribution to these experiences– either as a perpetrator of harm or a healer.
Results of the Work:
The result of this work was an exhibition made for two audiences, two illustrations and one physical piece for each of the six themes, a twelve piece poem, and a printed zine.
How the Work Was Delivered to the Masses:
In a physical space, Zeitgeist art gallery.
