Concept Cards: Pickaxe/ Ruby/ Strange

Concept/Purpose of the Work:
For my Illustration class, we were tasked with designing the front and back of a playing card. The concept of our design was based on a random word we got assigned, as well as a chosen adjective and monotone color. I was given the word "axe", and then chose "strange" and "ruby" to finalize my direction. Through my card design I played around with sense of space to create a strange world in which pickaxes walk themselves to work at their ruby–meteor mines. The design for the back of the card zooms out to show the environment fostering this strange scene, hinting that there are endless places just like this one.
Results of the Work:
As a result of having only three words as a base for the design, it successfully got across the strangeness and whimsicality I intended purely because of hoe creatively the mind needs to stretch when given so little direction.
How the Work Was Delivered to the Masses:
I presented my process and final card design to my illustration class in a group critique setting.
